T&T CARNIVAL

Enjoy Tobago's Masquerade

Earlier in the day it's not a continuous parade like you might expect. Individual bands parade downtown from Ciao Cafι area, along the sea front and also up to and inside the Market Sq. making the block back to the Port Area, before heading down to the end of the Esplanade.

The sea-wall's a great place to wait for the bands to go past, drinks to hand, cameras at the ready. Everyone's joyful and in high spirits, peace and love the order of the day. Remember, there is a great deal of alcohol consumed and although a high visibility of police presence is maintained, do be aware as you would in any large crowd.

Wear sensible shoes, colourful clothes, leave jewelry at home, carry your money in a bum-bag, hands free to 'wave something' when a band goes by. Have a "jump-up" in the Parade - fall out when the band's preparing its presentation at the judging points, then jump right back in as the band comes swirling by……………………

CARNIVAL MONDAY - MARDI GRAS (Fat Monday)

6 a.m. J'OUVERT (day opens) The Merry Monarch claims the Freedom of the Streets of S'boro and R'boro 'til about 9 a.m. Cross dressing, bodies covered in oil and mud, hilarious characters in old clothes - anything goes. Get there as early as you can and put on your dancing shoes - Music Fuh So!

From around 1 p.m to late evening - Mainly Kiddies but also Senior Parade of Bands from Uptown Main St to Market Sq and along the Promenade. Tomorrow's the big day. The nation is gripped in excitement amidst last minute preparations for the BIG PARADE………………..

CARNIVAL TUESDAY (Shrove Tuesday)

Usually from about 12 Noon 'til Midnight - Parade of Bands - The largest and most spectacular costumed groups, steel bands, music bands and D.J. big trucks.

"Last Lap" - The last Hurrah 'til next year - some say the sweetest part of the Carnival as the bands and dancers wend their weary way home in the late evening! Come back next year, or whenever you can - the Calypsos will change but the peoples' love for the Carnival will always be the same. Enjoy!!

If you fancy dressing up in carnival costumery, you'll need to find a Mas Camp i.e. the places where the costumes are made and sold. The Costume Bands' Association will provide details of participating bands so you can choose from the themes and fulfill your fantasy! Tel: 660 7225 & 639 4441.

TRINIDAD - Specialist Tour Guides are available for those wanting a taste of the Trinidad Carnival - Log on to www.carnivalscene.com for the ultimate experience in playing mas in the well organised good-time band - TRIBE.

AFTER CARNIVAL

From Ash Wednesday onwards, airport, hotels and beaches are ultra busy as loads and loads of foreign visitors and Trinis come to Tobago to "chill-out". Winding-down involves a fair amount of partying! Head for the beaches!
